chow/about

A collective of senior software engineers in Washington, DC.

Chow.Works is a collective of software developers led by Chris Howard. We've been taking on builds since 2021, and we pick work that helps people learn, find work, or get served well by the institutions they depend on.

Why "the people who run them"

Schools, agencies, and nonprofits are usually run by a few people doing the work of ten. The software they're handed is either built for a company a hundred times their size or held together with spreadsheets. We build the tools in between: focused, maintainable, and made for the staff who actually use them.

Chris Howard, founder

Chris has spent 25 years building software people depend on, from NASA satellite missions to platforms used across defense and intelligence to cloud at AWS and Microsoft. Along the way he has trained more than 200 engineers and taught computer science at colleges and universities across Maryland for over a decade.

Chow.Works is where that experience goes to work for the organizations that need it most and can least afford to get it wrong: the classroom, the caseload, the grant report.
